Nearly every guide online assumes a 120 V American branch circuit. Almost none of it transfers cleanly to a British ring final.
Three things that are different
The supply is 230 volts, so the same wattage draws roughly half the current an American installation would. A 500 watt display pulls about 2.2 amps here against 4.2 amps at 120 volts. That difference is why British households can run far more lighting from one socket than American guidance suggests.
Sockets are usually fed by a 32 amp ring final circuit rather than a 15 or 20 amp radial. The ring is shared across a whole floor, so the headroom is large but so is the competition from kettles, heaters and tumble dryers.
Every plug contains its own fuse to BS 1362, normally 3 amp or 13 amp. This is the part with no American equivalent, and it is usually what limits a run.
The plug fuse is usually the real limit
A 3 amp fuse allows about 690 watts at 230 volts. A 13 amp fuse allows about 2,990 watts. Light sets are generally supplied with a 3 amp fuse fitted, and that is the number governing how much you can hang off one plug.
Do not fit a larger fuse to get more lights on a run. The fuse is sized to protect the flex, not the lights, and a 13 amp fuse in a plug feeding thin light flex means the flex fails before the fuse does.

Outdoors: RCD protection is not optional
BS 7671 requires RCD protection for socket outlets likely to supply equipment outdoors. If your outdoor sockets are on a modern consumer unit with RCBOs or an RCD, you are covered. If you are running a lead out of a window from an older installation, use a plug-in RCD adaptor.
Equipment outside also needs an appropriate IP rating — look for IP44 as a minimum for exposed connections, and keep joins off the ground where water pools.
What to check before you buy
Look for a BS EN 60598-2-20 marking on the set, which is the standard covering lighting chains, and check whether it is rated for outdoor use rather than assuming.
The maximum number of sets that may be joined together is printed on the packaging. Manufacturers differ, and it is the figure that governs regardless of how much fuse headroom the arithmetic suggests.
Common questions
How many Christmas lights can I run in the UK?
Far more than American guidance suggests, because 230 volts halves the current for a given wattage. The practical limit on a single plug is the fuse in it — about 690 watts on a 3 amp fuse.
Can I change the fuse in the plug to fit more lights?
No. The fuse protects the flex, and light set flex is thin. Fitting a 13 amp fuse to a set designed for 3 amps removes the protection the cable relies on.
Do I need an RCD for outdoor Christmas lights?
Yes. BS 7671 requires RCD protection for sockets likely to supply equipment outdoors. If your consumer unit is older and lacks one, use a plug-in RCD adaptor.
What does IP44 mean on a light set?
It is a rating for protection against solid objects and splashing water. IP44 is the usual minimum for outdoor lighting. Higher second digits mean better water resistance.
