The wattages here are typical figures for a class of product, taken from the ranges manufacturers and retailers quote. They are not measurements of the set in your hands. Real products vary by bulb count, spacing and efficiency, and the same model bought three years apart can differ.

The number printed on your box, tag or rating plate always beats ours. Where the two disagree, yours is the one that governs, and if nothing is printed and the load matters, measure it rather than trusting a planning figure.

It works from what you type, and it cannot tell when what you type is wrong. Two things in particular are outside its sight.

It does not know what else is on your circuit. Few people can say with confidence which outlets share one, and if you leave that field blank the headroom it reports is optimistic by exactly the amount you forgot.

It does not know the condition or the true rating of your installation. It takes the breaker rating you select on trust. An oversized breaker on old or damaged wiring, a cord that was crushed last season, a joint that has been wet — none of that reaches the arithmetic, and all of it matters more than the arithmetic does.

It is not a substitute for the wiring regulations where you live — the NEC, BS 7671, AS/NZS 3000 or whatever applies to you — nor for the instructions supplied with your equipment. Anything beyond what you plug into an existing outlet is work for a qualified electrician, and in most jurisdictions it is notifiable work regardless of your competence.

Treat what you read here as one input to your own judgement, never as clearance to switch something on. Where you are unsure — about a cord, about what a circuit already carries, about anything the calculator cannot see — ask a qualified electrician first.
